‘Rock Of Ages’ Trailer: Tom Cruise Kills It, Says Adam Shankman

Get a load of that “Rock Of Ages” trailer, will ya. Holy power ballads, big hair, leather pants and bad decisions. There’s Julianne Hough being Julianne Hough, Russell Brand being Russell Brand, Alec Baldwin being Alec Baldwin in that he’s scene-stealing up a storm, Catherine Zeta Jones likely killing it as a very uptight mom/PTA [...]

‘Thor 2′ Loses Director Patty Jenkins

According to Deadline New York, the ‘Monster’ director left due to creative differences.

Patty Jenkins’ journey to Asgard has been cut short.

According to Deadline New York, the “Monster” director has left the production of “Thor 2.” The site reports that Marvel Studios is already in communication with agencies in its search for a new director. Given the sequel’s July 26, 2013, release date, a replacement is expected to be found quickly.

Although Jenkins allegedly left due to creative differences, Deadline also reported that she is still in good standing with Marvel and might end up working on another of the studio’s numerous superhero films in development.

Jenkins is now the second director to leave “Thor 2,” following director Kenneth Branagh’s announcement earlier this year that he wouldn’t be returning to the franchise. Branagh said his experience with “Thor” was a “joy” and that his decision was due to timing, not any ill will toward the franchise or the studio.

“Of all the American comics, ‘Thor’ was the only one I was really familiar with from my childhood, and it intrigued me, maybe because it was a bit more European, with those Viking helmets and its basis in Norse myth,” Branagh told Variety. “The scale was exciting, and I did love the character and the story. It had depth and gravity in addition to being an entertaining ride.

“I certainly wouldn’t rule out a return to Marvel,” he added. “We had an excellent collaboration.”

30 Seconds To Mars’ ‘Unplugged’ Wins MTV’s Best Live Performance Of 2011

Fans voted 30STM’s stripped-down rendition of ‘Hurricane’ the year’s best, ahead of Paramore, Beyoncé and more.
By James Montgomery

If, over the course of their This Is War album, 30 Seconds to Mars have not proved the following point, please allow me to state it once more: They are a band that truly only operates on a massive scale. From their globe-spanning, record-setting tour to their big-budget, high-concept music videos (ahem, “short films”), they are eternally going for the grandiose.

Which is why it’s noteworthy that fans voted their MTV “Unplugged” version of “Hurricane” #1 in our contest for Best Live MTV Performance of 2011 — besting Paramore’s #2-ranked “Brick by Boring Brick” — because it represents them at their most stripped-down and, really, their most minimal. Of course, that’s a relative term. Because while “Hurricane” does feature acoustic guitars and Jared Leto’s sparse vocals, it also comes backed by a stirring string ensemble, and the band’s ever-present Echelon, who chant and sing backup on the chorus, imbuing the song with a powerful air. The mood inside the studio is undeniably somber but, like pretty much everything 30STM do, there’s a raging, revelatory undercurrent too. Their performance is very much a communal thing, one where a celebration never seems all that far off.

And speaking of that communal vibe, that it was the band’s fans who voted them to victory on our Best Live MTV Performance countdown is proof enough that they love their 30STM any way they can get it — full-blown or scaled back. In a way, that connection is more powerful than a stack of amps or a 15-minute long music video … it’s truly the secret to the band’s success. Now they’ve got the hardware to prove it.

All this week, watch “AMTV” on MTV every day at 8 a.m. ET for our Best of 2011 lists. Then, come to MTVNews.com at 5 p.m. as we reveal our top picks of the year!

‘Dragon Tattoo’ Reviews: How Did Rooney Mara Do?

Moviegoers won’t be able to take their eyes off the American actress’ Lisbeth Salander, critics rave.
By Eric Ditzian

Rooney Mara owns “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.”

That is to say, while the film shows off David Fincher at his meticulous, moody best and Daniel Craig delivers yet another stellar performance, the beating heart of the picture — or, if you will, the exposed pierced nipple — is Mara as the spiky-haired hacker, Lisbeth Salander.

For all the shortcomings of “Dragon Tattoo”— and there are a bunch, from a pacing that sometimes drags to Swedish author Stieg Larsson’s deeply unsatisfying ending — you walk away unable to shake what you’ve just seen from Mara. Alternately vulnerable and vicious, her Salander is an entirely different creature from the one presented by Noomi Rapace in the Swedish version of the film and, what’s more, an entirely different creature from anything Mara offered in “The Social Network” and “A Nightmare on Elm Street.”

Let’s stop right there, before we go from gushing to outright hero worship. At least we’re not alone. With the “Dragon Tattoo” review embargo officially lifted, critics have been celebrating Mara’s performance.

The Transformation
“Rooney Mara’s blazing, uncompromising performance is the film’s center, practically its reason to exist. … Eyebrows bleached blond, hair jet black and scowling constantly, Salander has deliberately modeled herself as the opposite of the feminine ideal, and though Mara digs into her humanity and even sensuality, she never lets down Salander’s guard for the sake of the audience sympathy.” — Katey Rich, Cinema Blend

The Chemistry
“Mara and Craig make an indomitable screen pair, he nominally leading their intense search into decades-old serial killings, she surging ahead, plowing through obstacles with flashes of phenomenal intellect and eruptions of physical fury.” — David Germain, The Associated Press

The Sex Scenes
“[It's] Mara’s movie for the taking, and she snatches it up in dramatic fashion. … Fincher’s belief in her is borne out in a dominating performance of submerged rage, confidence and defiance. Baring all in the several sex scenes, both coerced and consensual, she goes all the way in a performance that compares favorably to that of Noomi Rapace in the Swedish version and its two sequels. She comes across here as the real deal.” — Todd McCarthy, The Hollywood Reporter

The Awards
“Mara, I feel, gives Salander a sadder and more vulnerable aura and a more emotionally readable quality than what Noomi Rapace delivered in the Swedish trilogy. You might compare the two films down the road and say, ‘Nope, don’t see it…six of one, half-dozen of the other’ but I know what I felt from Mara’s eyes, and there’s a lot going on inside her, I swear. Tremors and feints and glances and looks that say ‘stay away, I don’t want you near….wait, maybe I do.’ There’s enough in this performance, I feel, for Mara to be counted among the year’s Best Actress nominees.” — Jeffrey Wells, Hollywood Elsewhere

The Final Word
“You can’t take your eyes off Rooney Mara as the notorious Lisbeth Salander.” — David Denby, The New Yorker

HGTV, LA and Dining Room Tables

I’ve been watching a lot of HGTV since coming to LA. My favorite shows are House Hunters and House Hunters International. There’s also another show I like to watch called For Rent, but only because it makes me angry.

When it comes to apartments/homes, I think living in New York for the past eleven years has made me bitter because there was this whiny broad on For Rent a few nights ago who was looking at a huge place—A HUGE PLACE—and was like, “There’s no place for a dining room table…”

B*TCH, YOU’RE LUCKY TO GET A KITCHEN IN NEW YORK.

I hated her.

Now there’s some stupid lady on House Hunters who wants a townhouse with a fireplace that she can turn on with a light switch. IT HAS TO BE A LIGHT SWITCH because she doesn’t want to bend down and flip a switch on the floor.

WHO DO THESE PEOPLE THINK THEY ARE?

Anyway, I know my LA update is WAY overdue (and truth be told I wrote a long one last week but for some reason it didn’t save so I lost the whole thing and I was so angry that I just said, “Ah, f*ck it,” and closed the computer instead of rewriting) but to give you a quick update, I AM SO HAPPY HERE. I MEAN, I’M REALLY, REALLY HAPPY. And I think living here and watching HGTV—both of these things combined—has made me realize that New York was just beating me down. I mean, the fireplace lady—yes, she’s an idiot. But there’s nothing wrong with wanting a dining room table. Why did I get so mad at that lady?

Since being here, at least once a day I ask myself why I have lived in New York for so long. (It’s like I had Stockholm Syndrome or something.) CALIFORNIA IS AWESOME. It’s like the promised land. It’s sunny all the time and there are birds and flowers everywhere. I have space out here. I have a sofa on the patio out here. I HAVE A SOFA OUTSIDE. I haven’t seen one rat since I’ve been here. But hummingbirds? THEY ZIP BY MY HEAD EVERY DAY. I am so happy.

I’m supposed to go back to New York in November, but truth be told, I’m not sure I will.

Britney Spears, Nicki Minaj And Ke$ha ‘Till The World Ends’ Remix Leaks

Reworked tune features an opening verse by Minaj as Ke$ha sings atop Spears’ vocals throughout the song.
By James Dinh

Britney Spears isn’t the only pop titan dancing until the world ends: Nicki Minaj and Ke$ha have joined forces to add a new spin on an all-female remix of Femme Fatale‘s second single, “Till the World Ends.”

The reworked dance anthem, which leaked online Friday (April 22), appears to have surfaced earlier than expected as noted by a series of countdowns on all three of the stars’ websites.

Mixing the dance tune’s original sonic swirls with heavier bass, Britney tourmate Minaj starts off the remix by throwing down an aggressive verse, in which she calls out a female hater: “A-A-A-A-A-AYE!/ Chimpanzees is hatin’, but I take it all in stride/ Put her in a jungle with bananas on the side/ Told you they’d revive your career, but somebody lied/ I ain’t talkin’ poultry when I say this chicken’s fried.”

After Minaj spits a few introductory bars, Spears delivers the song’s first verse before an introduction for the all-star trio. “It’s Britney, bitch. I’m Nicki Minaj and that’s Ke$ha!” the Young Money MC proclaims.

Ke$ha, who originally wrote the track for the pop princess, takes part in singing the club-ready track’s chorus. Spears soon takes back control of the song as Ke$ha shadows the singer’s lines toward the end of the second verse and bridge. Unlike the original version, the “Till the World Ends” remix also features a stuttering dubstep dance break.

News of a star-studded collaboration was hinted earlier this week when producer Dr. Luke tweeted, “@NICKIMINAJ killed it tonight!!!! thanks!!!”
